TEMPORARY AIDE – Animal Care (Division of Racing Events)

Key Duties

The State of Colorado is seeking a Temporary Aide to support the Division of Racing Events in ensuring the welfare and safety of racing animals. The role includes assisting with laboratory testing programs, maintaining compliance with medication regulations, and supporting daily race operations. Key responsibilities:

  • Collecting, packaging, and tracking urine samples from horses, ensuring proper chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Observing horse behavior to safely and efficiently obtain samples and manage movement through the test barn.
  • Assisting licensed veterinarians in administering Furosemide and collecting related materials.
  • Maintaining records, updating databases, and verifying horse eligibility for racing.
  • Cleaning and maintaining the test barn, offices, and surrounding areas, including bedding stalls and managing equipment.
  • Setting up materials and tools required for horse care and testing procedures.
  • Providing guidance to staff and visitors on proper test barn procedures.
  • Participating in staff meetings, hearings, and providing assistance to horsemen and veterinarians as needed.
Requirements
  • Two years of customer service or office support experience demonstrating decision-making and multitasking, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and be on-call for emergencies.
  • Capability to lift or move up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as cleaning and setting up equipment.
  • Strong communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and a strong affinity for animals.
  • Knowledge of state rules, veterinary ethics, and procedures preferred.
