Key DutiesThe Port Director oversees all aspects of the City’s port, harbor, and Tom Madsen Airport operations. Responsibilities include leading and managing department staff, guiding infrastructure projects, and ensuring regulatory compliance across maritime and aviation facilities. The Director drives economic development through strategic planning, lease management, and improvements to operational programs. Additional duties involve financial oversight, preparing budgets, conducting market analyses, and representing the department to elected officials, other city departments, and external agencies.
RequirementsCandidates should have a bachelor’s degree in business management, maritime management, or a related field, along with at least eight years of relevant experience. A minimum of three years should involve harbor operations and three years in an executive-level role. Experience in capital project management and staff leadership, including union management, is required. Preferred qualifications include Alaskan maritime experience, construction management, and marine engineering expertise.
Certifications such as Facility Security Officer are required; additional certifications in Hazwopper, NIMS, or First Aid/CPR are preferred. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of modern port administration, marine facility management, and program development.
