Overview
In this position the candidate will be part of the Anti-Human Trafficking team, and will be responsible for direct implementation of the Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement and policies as they pertain to residential care. Assisting with specialized day to day care and counselling to the young women residing in Supported Housing. The Youth Worker will be expected to work in an off-site program of Covenant House Toronto.
We are currently hiring for 3 Part Time Youth Workers with flexibility for a variety of shifts: days, weekends and overnights (10:30pm-8:30am). These are replacement positions.
Responsibilities:
• Ongoing assessment of youths’ needs; individual counseling with youth. Establishing and maintain safety plan, as needed.
• Provide trauma-informed crisis intervention techniques in situations of physical confrontation, medical and psychiatric emergencies, and for youth who have recently experienced trauma.
• Acting as caregiver; assisting youth with nightly routines and sleep hygiene practices
• Acting as an advocate for youth both within the agency as well with external agencies.
• Management of external environment completing building resident safety checks and monitoring of surrounding community vis external cameras.
• Assisting in training of new staff
• To work and maintain the Sanctuary and safety of the Rogers Home for youth and staff.
• Perform all relevant documentation and ensure overnight duties are completed e.g. Health & Safety Requirements, Participants Daily Notes (PDN’s), Communications Log, Petty Cash logbook, incident reports.
• Stay up to date on all relevant communications, including staff/management/supervisory emails, client case notes, participant daily notes (PDN’s), training communications, policy, and procedures updates, etc.
• Promoting community inclusion, independence and self-determinism for the individuals supported. Support participants to identify, work towards and achieve their goals/personal outcomes.
Qualifications:
• College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent.
• Minimum two years’ experience in a shelter or residential setting.
• Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to the youth in our care.
• First Aid, CPR and basic computer skills an asset.
• Ability to identify, assess and intervene differentially with youth in crisis.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of community resources.
