The Fishery Biologist 1 will support the Division of Commercial Fisheries by working in the Fish Pathology Section. The primary responsibility is processing fish tissue samples for the Pacific Salmon Health Monitoring Project, which includes testing for multiple pathogens. Additional responsibilities involve:

Preparing and distributing sampling kits for field use.

Training field staff on proper sampling and safety techniques.

Summarizing and analyzing data, and contributing to reports.

Supporting regulatory programs related to fish health and disease management.
-
Assisting with investigations into fish mortality or morbidity events.
-
Performing general laboratory work while maintaining strict safety protocols.
This role provides valuable exposure to both applied and regulatory fish pathology, and occasional opportunities to contribute to research cases that may lead to publication.
RequirementsTo qualify, applicants must meet the State of Alaska’s minimum standards for this job class, including:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries science, natural resource management, or a related field. Equivalent coursework combinations may also be considered (including biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, hydrology, or GIS).

Knowledge & Skills:
-
Understanding of microbiology principles and laboratory safety.
-
Ability to safely handle materials containing pathogens.
-
Strong communication skills for working with supervisors, coworkers, and stakeholders.
-
Capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.

Other Requirements: A valid driver’s license is required.
Preferred applicants will also demonstrate experience with laboratory methods, analytical techniques, and familiarity with fisheries or aquatic sciences.
