Key Duties

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is seeking a licensed Electrical Trades II professional to perform advanced electrical and electronic work for the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Field Operations Unit. This role focuses on installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing ITS systems, including traffic signals, tunnel controls, variable message boards, cameras, fiber-optic networks, and other communication equipment. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing journeyman-level electrical tasks, including testing, calibrating, and maintaining equipment.
  • Conducting inspections and preventive maintenance on traffic signal control systems and ITS infrastructure.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing electronics, electro-mechanical systems, and communication devices.
  • Installing, configuring, and testing new ITS and electrical equipment according to CDOT standards.
  • Maintaining and documenting fiber-optic and network assets, ensuring compliance with NEC, NFPA, and MUTCD standards.
  • Collaborating with engineers, contractors, and ITS teams to support projects and resolve technical issues.
  • Preparing and updating as-built plans, reports, and documentation for electrical and communication systems.
  • Supporting emergency repairs, on-call response, and occasional out-of-town travel as required.
Requirements
  • Current, valid Colorado Journeyman Electrician license (Master Electrician license is an acceptable substitute).
  • Ability to obtain a Master Electrician license within one year if not already held.
  • Experience with electrical and electronic systems, fiber-optic networks, and communication infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with NEC, NFPA, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, organizational ability, and teamwork aptitude.
  • Valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class B within six months of hire.

Preferred:

  • Experience in ITS or transportation electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of network diagnostics, fiber optics, and traffic signal operations.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Applications, and SAP.
