Key Duties

As a Civil Engineer with the Department of Defense, you will provide technical and professional support for infrastructure projects, including the maintenance, renovation, and construction of real property facilities. Your responsibilities include:

  • Managing and monitoring construction projects from preconstruction surveys to as-built documentation.

  • Performing engineering analyses, reviewing design calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with standards and project requirements.

  • Providing technical guidance on civil engineering issues and assisting with in-shop planning.

  • Coordinating maintenance, upgrades, and utility system operations across the installation.

  • Offering policy guidance and expert recommendations on design, construction materials, and infrastructure improvements.

  • Applying knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards to all projects.


Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Professional Credentials: Professional Engineer (PE) license or successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) exam preferred.

  • Specialized Experience: Varies by grade level (GS-11 through GS-15) and may include project design, construction oversight, cost estimation, multi-phase infrastructure improvements, and management of large-scale civil engineering projects.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

  • Selective Service registration (for males).

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.

  • Maintenance of current certifications and possible security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, construction standards, and related engineering disciplines.

  • Ability to analyze engineering problems and recommend solutions.

  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local codes, as well as safety and environmental regulations.

  • Skill in providing guidance on construction, materials, and remediation projects.
