As a Boat Officer 1 with the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers, you will serve as a deckhand aboard the P/V Stimson, a 156-foot patrol vessel based in Kodiak. This role is essential to supporting patrol operations that safeguard Alaska’s natural resources and ensure public safety on state waters.
Core responsibilities include:

Assisting in the safe operation and upkeep of the patrol vessel, skiffs, and outboard motors.

Performing deckhand duties such as line handling, gear management, and use of deck equipment.

Helping with vessel machinery maintenance and general upkeep.

Planning and preparing meals for crew while at sea.

Operating the deck crane and assisting with loading/unloading tasks.

Supporting enforcement patrols, gear inspections, and emergency responses while underway.

At least six months of experience working on marine vessels (handling lines, performing wheel watch, basic maintenance, or food preparation).

Must be able to perform physically demanding labor and extended periods at sea.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work safely with tools and equipment.

Knowledge of marine operations, radio communications, and basic food preparation is preferred.
Special Notes:

Must possess or be able to obtain an Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariner Document before completing probation.

A U.S. Coast Guard license (Operator or Engineer) or Able Seaman (AB) credential is highly desirable.

Firearms eligibility is required; applicants with certain misdemeanor convictions may not qualify.

Employment is contingent on passing a fingerprint-based background check.
