Key Duties

The Assistant Attorney General-DLA primarily handles criminal appeals, representing the State of Florida in appellate courts. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and filing pleadings, reviewing assignments of error, and conducting legal research to support appellate briefs.

  • Presenting oral arguments and managing all procedural aspects of criminal appeals in Florida’s District Courts of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court.

  • Representing the state in federal habeas corpus proceedings, reviewing case records, preparing responses, and managing hearings.

  • Handling appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court when necessary.

  • Managing extraordinary writs and other special litigation assignments, including civil matters, post-conviction proceedings, and special projects as directed by the Bureau Chief.

Requirements
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from an accredited law school.

  • Admission to the Florida Bar, or membership in good standing in another state Bar with a plan to gain Florida Bar admission within 12 months.

  • Minimum of two years of professional legal experience in law practice, legal research, teaching law, or administrative/judicial hearings.

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage complex cases, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States.
